Diada de Sant Jordi 2011
From 23/04/2011 To 23/04/2011
On April 23rd Saint Georges Day, or Diada de Sant Jordi, is celebrated in Barcelona (similar to St. Valentine’s Day). The city streets are filled with thousands of people enjoying the famous book and rose’s stands, which can be found in all parts of Barcelona.
In Catalonia “la Diada” represents Valentine's Day, the tradition is that men give women a rose and women give men a book. A romantic and highly popular tradition, but Saint Jordi's day is not actually a public holiday so all shops are open and all transport functions as normal.
Sant Jordi will be familiar to English people as Saint George (Jordi is Catalan as George), Catalans venerate the same dragon slaying Saint as do the English. For this reason you can see a white flag with a red cross sometimes in Catalunya, such as in the FC Barcelona crest, which is the same as the English flag.
