The Festival Grec takes its name from its principal venue, where many events take place: the Teatre Grec, or Greek Theatre, on Montjuīc. This open-air theatre was built in a disused quarry on Montjuic for the 1929 Universal Exhibition. Venues used are all interesting cultural landmarks in the city, some examples in recent years include the Library of Catalonia (based in the former Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, a renowned Art Nouveau building), the Museum of Contemporary Art (Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, MACBA), the Picasso Museum, the Centre for Contemporary Culture (Centre de Cultura Contemporānia de Barcelona, CCCB), the Joan Mirķ Foundation and the CaixaForum art centre.
Some of the musicians that have played at the Festival Grec over the years include some true greats including Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, Lou Reed, Manhattan Transfer, Joe Cocker, Celia Cruz, Maria Creuza, Caetano Veloso, UB40, Chuck Berry, Elvis Costello, B.B. King, Bob Dylan, Laurie Anderson, Santana, Youssou NDour, Lokua Kanza, Keith Jarrett, Concha Buika, Antony and the Johnsons and Ryuichi Sakamoto, to name but a few.
Running throughout the summer, the Festival Grec offers the chance to see some outstanding performances in some truly magical locations. Try some live jazz in the Mirķ Museum gardens on a summers evening; up high on Montjuic Mountain looking over the city, with the sun setting behind Mount Tibidabo, you will have enjoyed a truly unique Barcelona experience far from the tourist trail. If you are visiting Barcelona in June, July and August, the Festival grec is not to be missed.
