Fira de Santa Llúcia
From 29/11/2011 To 23/12/2011
The Fira de Santa Llúcia is a tradional Catalan Christmas fair that dates from 1786 and in modern times has expanded to include over 300 stalls. On offer is a wide range of handmade Christmas decorations and gifts, mistletoe, poinsettias and Christmas trees.
The 2011 Fira will take place on Avinguda de la Catedral, from 3 to 23 December. A new lighting system will be inaugurated with the aim of creating a special Christmas atmosphere.
Perhaps the most popular item on sale is the curious Catalan figure of the caganer (crapper), a small figure crouching over a steaming turd with his trousers around his ankles, who pops up in traditional Catalan Christams scenes. The origin is unknown but is believed to be to do with fertility. Children enjoy a related popular tradition; the caga tio is a ‘shitting log’ with a wholesome smiley face that poops presents when beaten with a wet stick, accompanied by a traditional caga tio song. Other happenings at Santa Llúcia include a Nativity scene contest, parades and exhibitions, and a popular life-size Nativity scene in Plaça Sant Jaume.
Barcelona is wonderfully atmospheric at Christmas, especially in the Gothic Quarter. The Fira Santa Llúcia happens in the main shopping area so if you are in Barcelona then you will have plenty of opportunity to do your Christams shopping in the historical surroundings of the Gothic Quarter.
