Catalan National Day
From 11/09/2012 To 11/09/2012 Venue: Catalunya
The Catalan National Day commemorates Barcelonas defeat by the Spanish Bourbon army in the 1714 War of the Spanish Succession, a defeat that led to the end of Catalunya as a distinct nation. To this day Catalunya seeks to regain its former ancient independence.
This is a day of national re-affirmation, the Catalan flag can be seen flying on buses and balconies throughout the city. There are also marches held through the city, the centre being the statue of Rafael Casanova (who led the defending army) on the Ronda Sant Pere. Some die-heards make a pilgrimage to the monastery at Montserrat, Catalonias spiritual heart.
