Fira de Santa Llúcia 2012
From 15/11/2012 To 28/12/2012
The Fira de Santa Llúcia is highly traditional Catalan celebration, with its origins as far back as 1786. Essentially a traditional Christmas fair, the Fira de Santa Llúcia has grown year on year, perhaps thanks to its popularity with tourists as well as locals, and has now has expanded to more than 300 stalls, these sell a variety of handcrafted Christmas decorations and gifts, mistletoe, poinsettias and Christmas trees.
You may be surprised to see the curious Catalan figure of the caganer (crapper) on sale, an unlikely Christmas decoration you might say. This is the most popular figure for Nativity scenes in Catalunya, it is comprised of a small figure crouching over a steaming turd with his trousers around his ankles.
The theme continues in the guise of the caga tió, a smiley-faced ‘crapping log’ that craps out presents upon being beaten viciously by a stick by small children. Caga tió (crap uncle / crap guy in Catalan) is also an accompanying song that is sung whilst the log is hit with a wet stick. Smaller versions of the caga tió are on sale if you want to take on home and get stuck in.
Other attractions include a competition for the best Nativity scene, some musical parades, and exhibitions, including the popular life-size Nativity scene in Plaça Sant Jaume.
