Festa Major de la Barceloneta
From 26/09/2012 To 07/10/2012 Venue: Barceloneta
Barceloneta is a closely knit Barcelona ‘barrio’ located between the Old Port and the beach, the site of the former fisherman’s community. Come late September and early October as the heat of summer begins to wear off, the Barceloneta community throws itself into a local street party, almost an end of summer celebration, with incredible gusto.
Festivities begin with a firework display on the beach to open the Festa. As well as an exhausting a 24-hour football tournament, the fun continues with falcons (acrobatic groups), sardana dancing and a free tasting of traditional crispy coca bread washed down with muscatel, and ends with more of the same ten days later. In the days inbetween you can expect parades, music, fire-breathing dragons, open-air cinema and bouncy castles – an inclusive event with something for all generations.
Don’t forget to look out for General Bum Bum, a traditional character who parades with a wooden cannon, which fires sweets into crowds of children.
