Catalan National Day
From 11/09/2013 To 11/09/2013 Venue: Catalonia
El diada de Catalunya or Catalan National Day marks the loss of Catalonia’s independence at the hands of the Spanish Bourbon army during the 1714 War of Spanish Succession. This defeat led to the end of Catalunya as a nation and it becoming a part of Spain. Catalunya seeks to regain its independence ever since, and is currently seeking a referendum on the question of whether to stay in Spain or go its own way.
The diada de Catalunya is a day of affirmation of Catalan identity when the Catalan flag can be seen flying throughout the city, adorning buses, balconies and park benches. Marches held through the city, starting from a statue of Rafael Casanova (the leader of Barcelona’s defence force in 1714) on the Ronda Sant Pere. Die-heard patriots make a pilgrimage to a monastery on Montserrat, mountain, the site is an important symbol of Catalonia’s past and identity.
