Summer of Cinema in Barcelona

Cinema fans in Barcelona are in for a treat this summer when Spain’s Verdi cinemas will be showing a season of classics, digitally remastered materpieces from the likes of Francis Ford Coppola, Sergio Leone, Charles Chaplin, Ernst Lubitch, Roman Polanski and Francois Truffaut.

Starting from Friday June the 17th, Verdi’s Madrid and Barcelona screens will open things with “The Godfather” (177 minutes long), and after pause at 19.15, The Godfather II” (201 minutes), two masterpieces by Francis Ford Coppola.

Films being screened are a choice selection of classics, masterpieces of cinematic culture such as “Modern Times” (1925) or “The Great Dictator” (1941), both of Charles Chaplin. But these are new copies with remastered sound and picture, up to date for today’s movie fans.

Four of Polanski’s first films are on offer – “Knife in the Water” (1962), “Repulsion” (1965), “Cul de Sac” (1966) and “Rosemary’s Baby” (1968).

The programme also includes “A Fistful of Dollars” (1964), “Death has a price” (1965), “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly” (1966) and “Once Upon a Time in America” (1984) by Sergio Leone, and the mythical “To be or not to be” (1942), Ernst Lubitch and “Fanny and Alexander” (1982) by Ingmar Berman.

Completing the bill are “Staircase” (1969) by Stanley Donen, and “The 400 Blows” (1959), by François Truffaut.
