Wineries for Climate Protection asks the question what can wineries do to counteract global warming?

Global warming is one of the greates threats and challenges facing the planet this century and if increases in temperature continue the environment and its many diverse ecosystems will be either destroyed or negatively affected.

In order to reverse the trend and introduce a new culture of low-carbon emissions requires a local level response as well as a general response.

The wine making sector is extremely vulnerable to the affects of global warming, depending entirely upon the climate and the sutainability of ecosystems. Vines are very sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and global warming could drastically affect the quality of wines, especially in Spain where controlling the levels of sugar in grapes caused by extreme heat is already an issue.

Spains wineries are trying to address these challenges and to understand what they can do to play their part in reducing the emission of greenhouse gasses. So, Wineries for Climate Protection has come about as a way to raise awareness and provide tools and ideas to help wineries resist the march of global warming and the damage it causes.

This event in Barcelona brings together wine-growing companies from all over the world to exchange ideas and best practices established in wineries to reduce their CO2 emissions and carbon footprint. Attendees are to include Fetzer Vineyards and Mondavi from California, Concha y Toro from Chile, Mot Chandon from France, and Codorniu, Freixenet, Vega Sicilia, Chivite and Miguel Torres from Spain.
